Rubus phoenicolasius
The wineberry or Japanese wineberry, also known as the Wineberry, is one of the least known and most unusual raspberries in existence, due to the spectacular shell that protects its flowers during the beginning of flowering, which gradually retreats and disappears as the delicious wine-red raspberries produced by these plants begin to form.
This variety produces smaller but delicious raspberries. It is extremely robust and resistant, and has a large upright habit that makes it very easy to grow in our orchards, gardens or terraces.
It is native to areas of East Asia such as Japan, China and Korea and gets its name from the dark red colour of its fruits, which are reminiscent of red wine. But without a doubt, its most peculiar feature is the “shell” that surrounds the raspberries during flowering and gradually opens up until it almost disappears, revealing the fruits of this wine raspberry.
Its stems have small thorns, but they are not at all bothersome.
