The Siberian blueberry is the most famous honeysuckle plant thanks to its delicious teardrop- or bell-shaped berries. Within this species of plants, whose technical name is Lonicera caerulea, there are nine botanical varieties spread across Asia, Europe and North America. However, the most famous and appreciated variety is native to Northeast Asia, known botanically as kamtschatica, which is why Siberian blueberries are often called this, which is not entirely correct, as in Spanish they are known as blue honeysuckle, May berry or Siberian blueberries, and in English as honeyberry or haskap, which derives from the name given in the language of the native Ainu people of Hokkaido.
These shrubs are medium-sized and compact, reaching up to 1.5 metres in height, and their leaves remain a beautiful greyish-green colour in autumn until the first frosts arrive, making them ideal for creating beautiful, dense hedges. And, of course, their most distinctive feature is their unique teardrop- or bell-shaped berries, which are slightly aromatic, blue-violet in colour and have a sweet, exquisite flavour.
Siberian blueberry plants, or blue forest mother plants, are not completely self-fertile, so two different varieties need to be combined to achieve proper pollination and a good harvest. In our case, we sell the Aurora and Blue Pagoda varieties.
They are harvested in May and June.
