Jostaberry

Ribes x nidigrolaria

These plants are the result of a complex cross between blackcurrant, American black currant, and European currant. Their main characteristic is that they produce very rich, black berries similar to blackcurrants. We could say that before sweet currants existed, there were Jostaberries.

Ribes x nidigrolaria

These plants are the result of a complex cross among blackcurrant, American black currant, and European currant. Their main characteristic is that they produce black-sweet berries similar to blackcurrants. We could say that before sweet blackcurrants released, there were only Jostaberries.

Unlike their parents, blackcurrants and currants, Jostaberries are denser plants that don’t need pruning during the first three years of cultivation, except for the occasional unruly shoot, in which case only the tips need to be trimmed. Jostaberry plants are very attractive thanks to their plump canopies, as mature plants are about 150 cm tall and wide.

Their blacked-fruits, developed in smaller clusters than currants, resemble currants, although unlike currants, Jostaberries produce clusters of only 3-5 berries.

Harvesting takes place from early June to late July.
