The Japanese rose, or Hamanasu rose, is a species of rosehip native to East Asia. Unlike the dog rose (Rosa canina), these plants have more thorns, but they produce beautiful fruit characterized by tentacle-like projections at the base. They are remarkably hardy plants, capable of thriving in poor soil.
