Vaccinium myrtillus

Wild blueberries, or European blueberries, known in English as ‘bilberries’, are small plants that do not exceed 60 cm in height. As they are the original wild species, they are less productive plants and the fruits are smaller in size compared to more modern varieties.

Wild blueberries require acidic, fertile, well-drained soil to grow properly. It is advisable to grow them in semi-shaded areas that are not in full sun all day.

Wild blueberry plants are hardy and not very difficult to grow in our gardens, orchards or terraces. They also produce beautiful bell-shaped flowers, followed in later months by the classic blue-violet blueberries, similar to their cousin, the American wild blueberry (Vaccinium angustifolium).

They are harvested at the end of summer in August and September.
