Is aronia poisonous?

No, not at all! Aronia is not poisonous—neither its berries nor its seeds, nor any other part of the plant, such as the leaves or stems.

The fruit of the aronia, specifically the black fruit of the species Aronia melanocarpa, is often confused with that of the Virginia cherry or Virginia chokecherry (Prunus virginiana), whose fruits are also non-poisonous; however, its leaves and stems are poisonous due to their content of hydrocyanic acid or prussic acid. This confusion is also heightened by the similarity of their names in English: aronia is called ‘chokeberry’ and the Virginia cherry ‘chokecherry’.

So you can rest assured, consume aronia without any fear and take advantage of its incredible benefits!
