Yes, although “self-fertile” is not the correct term; rather, they are parthenocarpic (meaning they can produce fruit without fertilisation of the ovules). For this reason, it is advisable to combine these varieties of Mini kiwi or Kiwiño (Actinidia arguta) with others to improve pollination and ensure higher-quality fruit.
Not all authors agree that they are suitable as male plants for commercial plantations; however, for domestic use, they can be used as male plants with the advantage of producing fruit, unlike conventional male plants which only produce flowers. One of the best-known “self-fertile” varieties of Mini kiwi, Kiwiño, also known as Kiwiberry or Baby kiwi, is the Issai variety.
